About The Facial Foundation

What started as one physician's idea has become a life-changing experience for victims of domestic violence and other violent crime. Dr. Kevin Shumrick's idea became a reality in January of 2004.

"Working at University Hospital and Cincinnati Group Health Associates, I see patients who come to me with facial injuries and can't afford to do anything about it. I realized that a minor investment could pay major dividends in a person's life," says Shumrick.

Shumrick, a surgeon with Cincinnati Group Health Associates, took his original idea to the CEO of the Health Alliance. The Health Alliance sought community partnerships with Mercy Health Partners and TriHealth, Inc. - all three have become founding sponsors of this 501(c)(3).

Along with some of the area's leading plastic surgeons and reconstructive dentists, the three hospital groups will donate hospital care to needy individuals from the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area.

The Facial Foundation is dedicated to treating the whole patient with the cosmetic, social and emotional issues that come with having facial injuries as a result of being a victim of domestic violence, other violent crime, accidents or other injuries. "This is the perfect opportunity for the medical community and the health care community to work together and make a difference," says Shumrick.`

Since January, 2004, the Foundation has been dedicated to helping victims in our community FACE A NEW DAY with corrective surgery to repair facial injuries.

Candidates are referred to the Facial Foundation by area social service agencies as well as other means. While the Facial Foundation receives generous support from the three sponsoring hospitals and from its surgeons and dentists, we have no funding for dental-related items (I.e., X-rays, crowns, implants, etc.).  Almost 80% of all referrals we receive have some type of trauma to the jaw and/or mouth.  We currently have patient candidates with dental-related injuries waiting for our help.
